Elections

The City of Lithonia conducts nonpartisan municipal elections to elect its Mayor and City Council. Elections are administered in coordination with the DeKalb County Board of Voter Registration and Elections and follow the guidelines set by the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office. The City Clerk serves as chief registrar of the municipality, qualifying and filing officer, and the election superintendent for municipal elections.

Governing Body

Lithonia’s municipal government consists of:

  • Mayor
  • Five City Council Members (All Council Seats are at-large positions.)

Each elected official serves a four-year term, with positions staggered to ensure continuity in leadership.

Upcoming Election

The next municipal election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2025. The following City Council

Member seats will be on the ballot:

  • Diane W. Howard
  • Amelia Inman
  • Yolanda Sheppard

Candidate Qualifications

Individuals interested in running for office must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a resident of the city for a period of twelve (12) months immediately prior to the qualifying date, and shall continue to reside therein during his or her period of service;
  • Be a registered and qualified to vote in municipal elections of this city;
  • Comply with all other eligibility requirements as stipulated by Georgia state law.

Qualifying Information

To officially run for office, candidates must file the required documentation with the City Clerk’s Office at 6920 Main Street, Lithonia, GA 30058 during the designated qualifying period.

2025 Qualifying Period:

  • Monday, August 18, 2025 – 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Tuesday, August 19, 2025 – 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
  • Wednesday, August 20, 2025 – 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Required Forms:

All campaign finance reporting requirements are governed by the Georgia Government Transparency and Campaign Finance Commission.

Qualifying Fee

Qualifying fees are set at a statewide rate of 3 percent of the total gross salary of the preceding year (Georgia Election Code 21-2-131 (a). Fees must be paid at the time of qualifying.

  • Councilmember Qualifying Fee: $162.00

Voter Registration & Election Day Details

  • Last Day to Register to Vote: Monday, October 6, 2025, at 5:00 p.m.
  • Election Day: Polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Any voter in line at 7:00 p.m. will be permitted to vote.
  • Early/Advance Voting: Managed by the DeKalb County Board of Elections, following state guidelines.
